Polychromatic light enters into the prism and gets dispersed by Refraction.

  • Refraction is a process of Dispersion of light rays.
  • As the light enters from the air medium into the glass medium of the prism, it bends leading to dispersion of polychromatic light into its constituent monochromatic light rays -occurrence of a rainbow/spectrum.
  • This majorly takes place due to changes in the speed of light rays when traveling in a different medium.
  • The speed of light decreases as it enters from air to glass medium.
  • The difference in speed of light is due to different optical densities of different media.
  • The amount of bending depends on the wavelength of light.
