Polymerization is a process in which very small molecules, called monomers, combine chemically with each other to produce very large chain like molecule, called polymer.

Two basic types of polymerization are :

  1. Chain reaction (or addition) polymerization - monomers are added together, with no other products formed, initiation & propagation mechanisms are different
  2. Step reaction (or condensation) polymerization - small molecules, like water, is formed in the polymerization, no initiator needed, same reaction mechanism throughout

Polymerization

  • Polymerization is the process of combining monomers to form massive macromolecules of various shapes and sizes.
  • Polymerization can be divided into two types:
  1. Addition polymerization
  2. Condensation polymerization
  • Addition polymerization is a type of polymerization that occurs when monomers are joined together by their several bonds.
  • Condensation polymerization is a reaction in which two molecules are covalently bound to each other by losing a water molecule; the lost element is water, therefore the reaction is named condensation polymerization.
