A pome is a fleshy fruit consisting of an outer thickened fleshy layer and a central core with usually five seeds enclosed in a capsule (Esau, 1977). The carpels of a pome fruit are fused within the core, where the epicarp and the mesocarp, which form the hypanthial tissue, may be fleshy and difficult to distinguish from one another. The endocarp forms a leathery or stony case around the seeds (see Chapter 1 for more details). The fruits included in the pome group are listed in Table 7.1.1.
