The aquatic biosphere comprises habitats that exist globally which is dominated by water.

Aquatic system is classified into two main categories based on their salt content—freshwater habitats and marine habitats.

1) Freshwater habitats are low saline aquatic habitats with low levels of salt, even less than one percent. They comprise rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, swamps, wetlands, bogs and lagoons.

2) Marine habitats are aquatic habitats with salt concentrations of more than one percent. They include oceans, seas and coral reefs.
