CLASS - VI SUBJECT – PHYSICAL SCIENCE

SORTING MATERIAL INTO GROUP - NOTES

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:
1. What you mean by classification?
Ans: A systematic arrangement and grouping of things on the basis of similarities and
dissimilarities is called classification or sorting.
2. Write any four properties of Material?
Ans: Appearance, hardness, solubility and transparency.
3. Why is water called a universal solvent?
Ans: water dissolves a large amount of substances.so it is called a universal solvent.
4. Metals generally occur in solid state and are hard. Name a metal that exist in a liquid state
and metal that is soft and can be cut with knife.
Ans: Mercury is a metal that exists in liquid state. Sodium and Potassium are soft metals and can
be cut with knife.
5. Metals have lustre. When exposed to air some metals loose the shine. Give reason.
Ans: Metals when exposed to air react with moisture and gases present in it, there by forming a
dull layer of some other compound on it.
6. What is the similarity between Iron, Copper and Aluminum?
• Ans: They all have lustre
• They all are metals.
• They are hard.
7. Why a tumbler is not made with a piece of cloth?
Ans. A tumbler of cloth cannot hold liquids, because
a. Cloth piece is not hard enough to hold liquids
b. Cloth piece has very minute pores through which the liquid oozes out.
8. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are soluble in water. What is the importance of these gases in
nature?
Ans: The Oxygen dissolved in water are used by aquatic plants and animals to breathe. The
carbon dioxide dissolved in water is used by aquatic plants for Photosynthesis.
9. What are lustrous and non-lustrous materials?
Ans: Materials that have shine are called lustrous materials. Materials that do not have shine are
called non-lustrous materials.
10. How Materials can be sorted on the basis of Transparency?
Ans : Different objects can be classified into three categories on the basis of their
transparency.
• Transparent objects: Objects through which we can see clearly or which allow light
to pass through them are called transparent objects. For Example, acrylic sheet, air
and water.

• Translucent objects: Objects through which we can see but not clearly or which
allow light to pass through them partially are called translucent objects. For
example, butter paper and thin curtain.
• Opaque objects: Objects through which we cannot see at all or which do not allow
light to pass through them are called opaque objects. For example, wood and iron.

DISTINGUISH THE FOLLWING
1. Conductors and insulators
Ans:
Conductors Insulators
Materials that allow heat and electricity to
pass through them are called conductors. Eg.
Iorn,steel.

Materials that do not allow heat and electricity
to pass through them are called insulator. Eg.
Rubber,wood.

2. Miscible liquids and immiscible liquids
Ans:
Miscible liquids Immiscible liquids
The liquids which get mixed with water
completely are called miscible liquids. Eg Milk
in water.

Liquids which do not get mixed with water and
form a separate layer on keeping for some
time are called immiscible liquids. Eg. Oil in
water.

ANSWER IN DETAIL
1. How can you show that some solid like sugar, salt are soluble in water whereas solid like
chalk powder and sand are not soluble in water?
Ans: Take four beakers. Fill each one of them about two-third with water. Add a teaspoon
full of sugar to the first beaker, salt to the second beaker, chalk powder to the third and
sand to the fourth. Stir the contents of each beaker with a spoon and if we observe after
some time.
a. Sugar – disappears – completely
b. Salt - disappears – completely
c. Chalk powder – does not disappear.
d. Sand – does not disappear and they settle down at the bottom.
so, we conclude that sugar and salt are soluble in water, Chalk powder and sand are
insoluble in water.

Soluble and insoluble substance in water
Chalk powder / sand in water sugar / salt in water
