According to question,

x + 18% of x = 934560

=> x + 18/100 × x = 934560

=> x + 9x/50 = 934560

=> 50x + 9x/50 = 934560

=> 59x = 934560 × 50

=> x = 934560 × 50/59

=> x = 15840 × 50

=> x = 792000

Hence the population of the town a year ago is 792000.
