Porters generally use a cloth cushion on their heads to carry heavy luggage... why??

Porter's job is to carry heavy luggage on their hands and for this reason they wear a heavy cloth o their heads. This is because heavy cloth protect their skull from any sort of major injury. Secondly as the cloth area has large surface area in return it will exert less force on the head of porter.
