"Portia: O me, the word "choose"! I may neither choose whom I would nor refuse who I dislike; so is the will of a living daughter curbed by the will of a dead father. " What mood do the words 'O me' suggest to you?

Answer:

The mood of melancholy is shown in Portia.

Portia's melancholy is the result of her anxiety over the prospect of her future husband. Whenever each suitor comes, Portia was anxious to know whether they will select the right casket and become her future husband.

"Oh, the word “choose” is strange! I can’t choose who I like, or refuse who I dislike. I’m a living daughter still controlled by the wishes of her dead father. Isn’t it a pain that I can’t choose or refuse anyone, Nerissa?"  These words demonstrate that she is in a deep melancholic state.

Explanation:

Portia's father had devised a lottery of caskets for the suitors. There were three caskets namely gold, silver and lead. One of them contains a portrait of Portia. Whichever suitor chooses the casket which contains Portia's picture, would win her as his wife.

Due to this condition, though many suitors came to Portia, she couldn’t choose any of them by herself as it would not fulfil the condition given in her father’s will. This is the reason for her melancholy.

Hope this helps you.
