1. This being the Trial Scene or the Courtroom Scene, many characters are present here, including Antonio, Bassanio, Portia (disguised as Balthazar) and Nerissa (as the messenger), Shylock, Gratiano, the Duke, his attendants and Salerio. Portia asks him to ‘Tarry’, or wait because she has more to talk to him about. She wants to tell Shylock that there are more legalities that he needs to know.

2. Yes, Portia has already told Shylock about the law pertaining to shedding a ‘drop of Christian blood’. Doing so will amount to murder and the state of Venice will legally be allowed to confiscate Shylock’s property and goods.

3. Under Venetian laws, if a foreigner kills, attempts or even conspires to kill a citizen of Venice, half of his property goes to the person he conspired against. The other half of his estate goes to the state of Venice, while the conspirator is at the mercy of the Duke. The Duke is legally empowered to forgive the accused, punish him or even award him the death sentence.

4. Yes, Portia proves beyond doubt that Shylock is an offender according to the laws of Venice. She proves that he conspired to take Antonio’s life, using the bond as a medium to trap him.

5. The final verdict given by Portia is that Shylock is not entitled to any amount of money or the pound of flesh, while his life was in the Duke’s hands. Antonio is convicted of conspiring against a citizen of Venice. Therefore, he loses half his property to Antonio and the other half to the state of Venice. However, the Duke pardons his life.

6. Character traits of Portia: In this scene, Portia proves that she is an intelligent lady who knows how to use the law to her benefit. She is well aware of the laws of Venice and knows how to apply them. Also, Portia is a strong character who can convince the court with her argument. She is also able to convince Shylock. In giving Shylock a chance to show mercy, Portia comes across as a fair individual. However, when Shylock continues being revengeful, she justly traps Shylock within the legal framework. Further, towards the end of the scene, she mischievously asks Bassanio for his wedding ring and adds an element of suspense to the plot.
