Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India and inaugurated the Age of Colonialism, which brought radical changes in the political, economic, and cultural spheres in Asia.

• The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive by sea in India, thereby establishing a monopoly in the maritime trade between Europe and Asia for almost a century before the arrival of Dutch.
• The Portuguese overseas empire was known "Estado Da India" and its initial aim was to create a monopoly on Black Pepper trade and East spices.
• Portuguese people used force to make a profit, by forcing ships and traders to pay security duties.
• Many Portuguese words are found in Indian language.These are Kamraa, Kameej etc. Other words include also include tobacco, corn, potato, papaya, cauliflower, alfanso mango and guvava
• Portuguese had also brought Catholic Christianity to India. Portuguese also found the first printing press in India in 1565, and the first book printed was on medicinal plants.
