Explanation:

The Advent of Portuguese to India

Among the Europe nations to colonize India, Portugal was the first to set up its territory in India. On 20th May 1498 Vasco da Gama successfully set his foot on Malabar Coast’s Calicut. The Portuguese set their sight on the spices that were produced in India. Those days the demand for Indian spices was very high. Soon some territories of India like Goa, Daman and Diu were brought under Portuguese control.

The Portuguese were followed to India by Dutch, British, Danish and lastly the French. The Portuguese fought with the Dutch, British, Danish and the French to establish their supremacy in India. But they were not able to succeed much. The British and the French defeated Portuguese in many battles and they became the dominant foreign force in India and thus the influence of the Portuguese reduced to small areas.

But it is true that Portuguese were the first to land in India there by showing the way for others who followed their lead. Their success in discovering India encouraged others European nations and among them the British colonized India and ruled till 1947.
