ADVANTAGES

  • Systematic and scientific study of elements

By knowing the properties of elements in a particular group , the properties of the rest of the elements can be predicted.

  • Discovery of new elements

Mendeleev left some gaps for the elements to be identified.

He called these elements as:

  1.   Eka Boron (Scandium)
  2.   Eka  Silicon(Germanium)
  3. Eka Aluminium(Gallium)
  • Correction of doubtful atomic masses.

His periodic table helped in correcting the atomic masses of some elements based on their positions in the periodic table.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Position of hydrogen

a correct position for H could not be assigned in the periodic table.       Hydrogen could be placed both in alkali as well as halogen group.

  • Anomalous position of some elements

In some cases elements with higher atomic mass preceded the elements with lower atomic mass.

  • position of isotopes

Periodic table is based on atomic weight. So isotopes should be placed in different position.

  • Grouping of Elements

some similar elements seperated and dissimilar elements were grouped together.

  • Position of lanthanides and actinides

They were not given proper places in the periodic table.

  •     Position of metals and non metals.

Most of the groups were mixed groups, containing of metals,non-metals and metalloids.

  • Force of periodicity

He didn't explain the force of periodicity among the elements.

  • position for noble gases

Mendeeleev's original periodic table did not indicate any of the noble  gases, which were discovered later . They were added by Sir William   Ramsay as group zero, without the disturbance to the basic concept of periodic table.
