Without feedback, homeostasis cannot occur. This means that an organism loses the ability to self-regulate its body. Negative feedback mechanisms are more common in homeostasis, but positive feedback loops are also important.

Positive feedback mechanism: Increased level of a hormone in blood causes release of another hormone is called positive feedback. For example, increased levels of estrogen in blood during menstrual cycle causes anterior pituitary to release luteinizing hormone (LH) which results in ovulation (release of ovum from ovary).

Negative Feedback Mechanism: When the level of hormones secreted by some endocrine glands reach above a critical level, they feedback to inhibit the secretion of hypothalamic releasing hormones and anterior pituitary hormones. This type of hormonal regulation is called negative feedback control.
