Positive ions have smaller radii and negative ions have the largest area in comparison to the radii of the atom owing to the reason that the nucleus cannot hold or contain the 18 electrons in the Cl-ion as tightly or compactly as the 17 electrons in the neutral atom, and the negative ion is significantly larger than the atom from which it forms. For this same reason, positive ions are and should always be smaller than the atoms from which they are formed.
