Post mortem staining gets fixed in about 7-8 hours after death.
It takes place by coagulation of blood in capillaries , due to which the staining becomes permanently fixed, and cannot be altered even if the position of the body is changed after death.
This is known as post mortem lividity or hypostasis and develops during the interval of early post mortem.
