Soil acidity (and, for that matter, acidity of anything else) is measured on a scale between 1 and 14. All below 7 is regarded acidic. All of the above is regarded alkaline. Most crops in the garden flourish at a pH from 6 to 7.5.
(a) Thus, potatoes grow better in acidic soil that has a ph of 5.5
(b) Broccoli will grow better in a alkaline soil, as adding a lot of lime to the acidic soil will make it more basic in nature thereby increasing its overall ph level.
