The potential difference across the terminals of a cell is called the terminal voltage. Terminal voltage= the actual potential difference across the terminals of the supply when a current is being supplied.

The potential difference  across a cell may be:

(3) Equal to its emf

- Electromotive Force (emf) is the maximum potential difference between the terminals of a cell when there is no current flowing inside it.

- As soon as a current starts to flow, the potential difference in the cell decreases.

- Hence, the p.d. may be equal to the emf but cannot exceed it.
