When substances are powdered, the total surface area of all the smaller particles, is much greater than the surface area of the substance as a whole. So, the number of vacant sites available for adsorption is more. Thus the extent of hydration in powdered substances is more.

Answer:Adsorption is directly proportional to the surface area as adsorption is surface phenomenon. A finely divided substance behaves like a good adsorbent because it has a large surface area. Both physisorption and chemisorption increase with an increase in the surface area.
