Power factor is cos theta = R/Z

Z = \sqrt{R^{2} + (XL^{2} - XC^{2}  )}

Our circuits are generally inductive. So we need to increas Xc by adding capacitive elements into circuit

so that Z becomes approx equal to R to make power factor close to 1
