Answer- The above question is from the chapter 'Power Sharing'.

Given question: "Power sharing leads to better outcome." Explain.

Answer: Power sharing leads to better outcomes mainly because of two reasons:

(a) Prudential reasons

(b) Moral reasons

(a) Prudential reasons:

1. The first prudential reason is that power sharing decreases the chance of creating any social conflict.

2. Power sharing is the best to ensure stability of political order as it reduces social conflict which is the reason for creating violence and political instability.

3. For a short run, the domination of majority over minority seems to be attractive but in the long run, it would undermine the nation's unity and strength.

(b) Moral reasons:

1. Power sharing is considered as the very spirit of democracy.

2. A democratic rule includes the sharing of power with those who have to exercise the powers and with those who have to live with those effects. This is because people have to right to know how they will governed and they should be consulted.

3. A legitimate government is that government where the citizens get a place in the system of power sharing via participation.

Answer:

Power sharing is a term which is used to describe a system of governance in which all major segments of society are provided a permanent share of power.

Power sharing leads to better and efficient outcomes because:

1) Power sharing helps to reduce the possibility of conflict between social groups. Power sharing is a good way to ensure stability of political order as social conflict often leads to violence and political instability.

2) Imposing the will of the majority community over others may look like an attractive option in the short run, but in the long run it undermines the unity of the nation. Tyranny of the majority is not only oppressive for the minority but it also brings ruin to the majority.

3) The very spirit of democracy is power sharing. A democratic rule involves sharing power with those affected by its exercise, and who have to live with its effects. Citizens of a country have the right to be consulted on how they are to be governed. A legitimate government is one where citizens, through participation, acquire a stake in the system.
