In Mughal period, the village panchayats were known to be the local body of justice and law system in particular regions of villages.

Functions :-

1. General mass did not have the direct interaction with the chief government of Mughals. In this manner, village panchayats were very useful. Villagers could put their views in panchayats so as to raise their voices in the main ruling system.

2. The problems of villagers were to be solved in panchayats in the guidance of Mandal, the headman of panchayat. The village jury was mainly allocated to have control over local system in village. Issues related to caste were settled in panchayats.

3. There was also a common treasure of panchayats which was used for the social welfare of people.

Powers :-

1. Panchayats had the supreme privilege of expelling the person who broke the rules and regulations.

2. The decision of panchayats was compulsive on everyone. One had to follow the rules made by headman and the wise persons of panchayats.

3. Panchayats had the right to represent the views of general mass in the main ruling system of Mughals.
