Portia is a strong willed and proud lady.  She is also very wise and witty. Her character is one with beauty and brains. She is a very capable monarch and knows the world. When she hears about Antonio's letter she tells Bassanio, "to despatch all buisness and be gone" because she realises how much Antonio has done for the two of them and what a great soul he is. She is quick to save him from the clutches of Shylock as well, which proves her capability and brains.
