pq is the current carrying conductor in the plane of paper as shown below.

(i) Find the directions of the magnetic fields produced by it at points R and S.
(ii) Given > 1), where will the strength of the magnetic field be larger? Give
reasons.
(iii) If the polarity of the battery connected to the wire is reversed, how would
the direction of the magnetic field be changed?
(iv) Explain the rule that is used to find the direction of the magnetic field for a
straight current carrying conductor,

Answer:

i) at R the direction is into the plane

at S the direction of magnetic field is out of the plane

ii) if R1 > R2 , then we know

B = u / 4π × 2 I / L

B ∝ 1/ L

so

magnetic field at S is greater than at point R

iii)  if the polarity of the battery is reversed then direction of magnetic field is also reversed

at point R , the magnetic field will be out of the plane and at point S the magnetic field will be into the plane

iv)  right hand thumb rule

in this rule thumb represent the direction of the current and the curling of the fingers represent the direction of the magnetic field

Explanation:

hope it will be clear to you !!!
