SECTION A -READING 20 Marks 1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow : (8 Marks) ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture originated in China as a form of medical treatment about 2,500 years ago. The treatment involves insertion of small metal needles on the different points in the human body. Acupuncture experts of China devised guide drawings for the exact positions of these points. They selected 787 separate puncture points on the body. These drawings are available even today. With the help of these drawings the needles are inserted at specific points for a particular disease. For example, if a patient has an eye trouble, the needles will be inserted into his eye line. The needles do not go deep and the process is quite painless. A single treatment may last only 10 minutes. Acupuncture is being used in China, Japan, the USA and many parts of the world today. It is an effective treatment for relieving pain in many body-parts. It has been used to treat malaria, stomach disorders, rheumatic pain and some other diseases. Now, it has also been widely accepted for anaesthetic purposes. In 1971, two U.S. scientists observed the surgical removal of an ovarian cyst under the acupuncture anaesthesia in Beijing. In this operation the needles were inserted in the patient's wrists. She remained totally conscious without showing any evidence of discomfort. Till now the scientists have not been able to fully explain how acupuncture works. But some of them have suggested that/the needles might be relieving the nerves affecting a disease.
