Pragya while performing an experiment in chemistry lab accidentally dropped a zinc plate in copper sulphate solution and out of curiosity she left that solution as it is for a few days and after few days she was surprised to see a number of holes in the zinc plate and the colour of solution fades away.
Read the above passage and answer the following questions
a) Name and define the chemical reaction taking place.
b) Write a balanced chemical equation for this chemical reaction.
c) State the reason for change observed in the zinc plate.

Answer:
1) The reaction taken place is displacement reaction.
Displacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which a highly reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from it salt solution.
2) Zn+ CuSO4------》ZnSO4+ Cu
3) The colour of the zinc plate has changed to brown as the copper has got displaced from its solution and the zinc metal is coated by copper layer.
4) No reaction would have taken place when silver is added to copper sulphate solution as silver is less reactive than copper.
Hope this bring a smile in your face
