By Jagran Josh. They were also called Gurjara- Pratihars, because they originated from Gurjarata or south-western Rajasthan. They ruled over western India and parts of northern India from mid-7th century to 11th century. The earliest well-known king of this dynasty was Nagabhatta .

The origin of the dynasty and the meaning of the term "Gurjara" in its name is a topic of debate among historians. The rulers of this dynasty used the self-designation "Pratihara" for their clan, and never referred to themselves as Gurjaras.
