Praveshika is a student of class 10. Her teacher was teaching the types of chemical reactions in the class. Praveshika was asked to perform electrolysis of water experiment. Praveshika set up the apparatus for the activity and she took pure water (distilled water) to carry out the reaction. She connected electrodes to the battery and completed the circuit. No reaction takes place even passage of electricity for a considerable time also. She discussed this problem with her classmate Bhumika. Bhumika was told to add certain substances in water before supplying electricity. When electric current passed through water, she observed gases X & Y are releasing from electrodes. the volume of X collected at one of the electrodes is 16 ml and whereas the volume of gas Y collected over the other electrode was 8 ml.
