Among the Luo, these songs were created and composed by local musicians who sang them in accompaniment of Orutu, one of the stringed Luo harps or the popular eight-stringed lyre called nyatiti. Others were composed by girls singing praises of their boy friends (chodegi) or by men praising their lovers and those they intended to marry. This one was sung by a young man about his experience with his girl friend:

Koyo chamowa kawan dalau  = We stood in the cold night together.

Koth goyowa kodi  = It rained on us while we were together.

Mudho dinonwa kawan kodi  = Darkness found us together

Jahera iberna manyar Asembo  = I love you Asembo's daughter

Ibema kama oa e polo  = Your beauty is like that of a girl from the sky.

Sibuor ruto kawan kodi  = The lion roared when we were alone.

Winy yuakna kawan kodi  = Birds cooed/cried when we were alone.

Kwach ruto kawan kodi  = The leopard roared near us.

Mudho chamowa kawuoth odhierowa  = Darkness swallowed us while we stood and conversed.

Yaye jaherana nyathi go Omolo berni ema oketho wiya.  = My lover; Omolo's sister your beauty and love has made me mad.
