The Preamble to the Indian Constitution has been added similarly to the one in American Constitution. The introductory part of the Preamble is -

'We the people of India having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC' followed by the ideals - 'and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic, and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all

FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION

The introductory part mentions two important aspects-

1. Source of power : India is a democracy, which means the primary source of power in the nation remains its citizens. Therefore the preamble reiterates the same by mentioning it in the beginning

2. Kind of polity: India is a sovereign (free to conduct its external and internal affairs, not under pressure from external memberships like UN and Commonwealth), democratic- deriving power from its citizens, republic - having an elected head, secular - equal treatment and support to all religions and socialist - working for a better social fabric in the country. The word 'secular', and 'socialist' (along with 'and integrity') were added by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment also called the 'Mini-constitution.'

The ideals mentioned are 'Justice' (taken from Russian Revolution) and 'liberty, equality and fraternity' (taken from the French Revolution) known as the holy trinity.
