In any kind of osmosis involving the transport of materials across different membranes, precaution should be taken that the type, as well as the concentration of the fluids used, are compatible with the membranes in question.
In the case that the fluids are not compatible with the membranes, it might cause the destruction – partial or complete – of the membranes.

In potato osmoscope, the cavity should be deep enough to keep only a thin layer of tissues at the base of the potato. The sugar solution should be of sufficiently high osmotic concentration as compared to the cell sap of potato cells.
