Precis writing- The connection between science and democracy is closer than issometimes thought, and the common link is the emphasis on freediscussion as opposed to authority. In the unscientific age orcommunity, there are official repositories of wisdom, such asEgyptian priests and Tibetan lamas. The men who possess officialwisdom are or are closely connected with the men who holdpolitical power. Resistance to what they enjoin is an offenceagainst the gods, and rouses popular detestation, even when to anoutsider it seems to be in the popular interest. In such a mentalatmosphere, despotism or oligarchy is easily established andperpetuated, for authority in matters of opinion is naturallycombined with authority in practical affairs. But where thescientific outlook has become fairly common, it becomescustomary to demand something more than emphatic assertion orappeal to ancient tradition before assent is given. There is, ofcourse, still authority; few of us have examined the evidence thatthe distance of the sun is 93, 000, 000 miles; or that light travels 1, 86, 000 miles a second. We accept these statements because wehave heard them made by people whom we consider worthy ofbelief. But we consider them worthy of belief, not because theyhold an opinion which has been held from time immemorial, orbecause they can quote from a sacred book, or because if wedisagree they will cut off our heads or put our families intoconcentration camps. Any man is entirely free to hold what opinionhe likes about the velocity of light, and the only penalty he incursfor an unusual opinion is that of being thought a fool. As a resultof free discussion by all those who are capable of forming ajudgement have come to agree, and their authority is not enforcedbut based on reason. The habit of basing opinions on reasons, when it has beenacquired in the scientific sphere, is apt to spread to the sphere ofpractical politics. Why should a man enjoy exceptional power ofwealth merely because he is the son of his father? Why shouldwhite men have privileges denied to those with othercomplexions? Why should women be subject to men? As soon asthese questions are allowed to come into the light of day and beexamined in a rational spirit, it becomes very difficult to resistthe claims of justice which demands an equal distribution ofultimate political power among all adults, with the exception ofthose who are insane or criminal. It is, therefore, natural that theprogress of science and the progress towards democracy havegone hand in hand.
