In the first step, a proton adds to form two possible carbocations (I and II). Since carbocadon (I) , Step II. In the second step, the ion readily attacks the 3° carbocation (I) forming 2-Chloro-2-methylpropane as the major product.

The major product formed when HCl is added to Isobutylene is 2-chloro-2-methyl propane.

Mechanism involved- This electrophilic addition reaction takes place under Markovnikov's rule.

  • Chemical formula of Isobutylene- C4H8
  • Chemical formula of 2-chloro-2-methyl propane- C4H9Cl

2-chloro-2-methyl propane is also known as tert-Butyl Chloride.

  • HCl ➡️ H+ ➕ Cl-
  • Isobutylene form 2 carbocation reaction, first is 1° carbocation which is less stable and the other is 3° carbocation which is more stable. Hence, 3° carbocation continues to react with Cl- ion to proceed the reaction.
