The forest acts as a roadblock for many natural disasters. It prevents floods, duststorms and more. If it were replaced by asphalt the area would be prone to floods as there would be no trees to hold the soil together and thereby letting the soil be washed away by runoff and asphalt isn't really the best at absorbing water. Also, since the trees are removed, strong winds can remove erode the soil and thus cause dust storms. The removal of the forest also steals the natural habitat of all the animals in that forest.
