Given:

E°F2/F- = +2.87 V, E°Na+/Na = -2.71 V

To find:

Predict whether F2 and Na react with one another.

Solution:

E₀ cell = E₀ reduction - E₀ oxidization

From given, we have,

E₀ cell = 2.87 V - (-2.71 V) = 5.58 V

Na → Na+ + e- (oxidation)

F- + 2e- → F2 (reduction)

As the emf of the cell is positive (E₀ cell = 5.58 V),

the reaction between Na and F is spontaneous and will react with each other.

Answer:

Yes they would react with each other

Explanation:

In a electrochemical cell, a chemical reaction of oxidation and reduction takes place. One cell is oxidised while the other gets reduction

Now we are given that

E of F is 2.87 while E of Na is -2.71

Overall potential difference between the cells

EMF = 2.87 V - (-2.71 V)

= 5.58 V

Since the potential difference is sufficient so F2 and Na would react with each other
