Why did Sushilchandra's neighbours get angry with him ? Ans. Sushil was not so well behaved. He would keep playing pranks.
Subal Chandra’s son was Sushil Chandra and both of them were opposite to their names. Subal, whose name meant ‘the strong one’, was actually quite weak and Sushil, whose name meant ‘gentle and well- mannered’, was quite notorious.
[Note:- We have been introduced to the central characters of the story- Subal and Sushil. Subal is the father who is weak and Sushil is the son who is naughty.]
Sushil, being of notorious (naughty) nature, used to trouble the entire neighbourhood with his acts of mischief. This used to make the father very desperate to punish him. But, Subal suffered from rheumatism (a disease which causes pain in the joints and muscles) which made him unable to catch hold of Sushil. Whenever he tried to punish him, Sushil would run away, so most of the slaps would miss the target! On those rare occasions when he was successful in catching him, Sushil had a really bad time. The story begins on a Saturday. Sushil’s school was to get over by two in the afternoon but he was in no mood to go to school. Firstly, it was the day of Geography test and secondly, he wanted to see the display of fireworks at Boses’ that evening.
[Note:- Sushil , like any other young kid was not interested in going to school. He was scared of the Geography test and also, he wanted to see the fireworks at Boses’.]
After thinking a lot, Sushil jumped into his bed at the time of going to school. Subal was surprised to see him in bed. Sushil told him a lie that he has a terrible stomach ache and he cannot go to school. Subal understood his clever plan and decided to teach him a lesson.
[Note:- Sushil was telling a lie to escape going to school. Subal could look through his plan and decided to teach him a lesson.]
Subal locked the room and went away to prepare a bitter brew for his son. Sushil was now in a dilemma. He wanted to go to the Boses but now there was no chance. Subal brought a big bowl of bitter brew for him to drink but Sushil jumped out of the bed saying that he was fine now and was going to school.
[Note:- When Sushil saw his plan failing, he decided to go to school. He had planned that he would skip the school and enjoy at home but his father had understood his cleverness and had locked him in the bedroom, to rest. He had to drink a bitter brew on top of that!]
Subal sternly told him that he would not go anywhere and would take rest the whole day. He forced the bitter brew down his throat. Afterwards, he locked the room from outside and left.
Sushil lay on the bed the whole day, crying. He kept on saying to himself that had he been as old as his father, he would have done whatever he wanted and nobody would have locked him like that.
[Note:- One can feel Sushil’s sadness. He had different plans for the day which were now going to be spoiled as he was now locked inside a room. He wished he was a grown up person like his father where he could be free to do whatever he liked with nobody stopping him.]
