POP is prepared by heating gypsum (CaSO4•2H2O) to temperature of 100°C (373 K).

CaSO4•2H2O —(∆ 100°C)—> CaSO4•½H2O + H2O.

  • Uses :

  1. It is used in hospitals for setting fractured bones in the right position.
  2. It is used in making toys, decorative materials, cosmetics, chalks and cast for statues.
  3. It is used for making the surfaces smooth specially the walls of houses before painting them.
  4. It is also used in designing ceilings of houses and other buildings.
