Prepare 2-ethoxy-3-methylpropane with the help of williamson synthesis

Explanation :

williamson synthesis

It is method to prepare unsymmetrical , tertiary ether .

In this method : haloalkane reacts with sodium alkoxide and as a result ether and sodium halide is formed .

The general reaction involved is :

RX + NaOR ----> ROR + NaX

For example :

CH₃Cl + CH₃ONa -------> CH₃OCH₃   + NaCl

methyl chloride  sod.methoxide     methoxy methane   sodium chloride

Now , by the same method we can prepare 2-ethoxy-2-methyl propane

Answer:

                                                     SN2 RXN

CH3-CH2-Br + Na-O-C(CH3)3  ==========> CH3-CH2-O-C-(CH3)3

                                                       -NaBr

Explanation: bromoethane is a polar compound so bromine gets partial negative charge and ethyl group becomes partially positive. also in the  tertiary sodium butoxide the Na being electropositive and ionized (being alkali metal (except lithium(Li) is covalent) becomes Na+ and tert butoxide ion becomes negatively charged. then Na+ gets together with Br- to form NaBr . and the tert butoxide ion goes with ethyl group forming tert butyl ethyl ether i.e. 2-ETHOXY-2-METHYLPROPANE.
