ENTERITIS is the inflammation of small intestine and it also involve the stomach (gastritis) and large intestine (colitis).
- Types - viral or bacterial infection, radiation induced, medication induced, alcohol or drug induced, enteritis related to poor blood flow, enteritis related to inflammatory conditions, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
- Symptoms - Fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, loss of appetite.
- Usual onset - Symptoms of enteritis for more than 3 or 4 days.
- Treatment - Radiation therapy
MALARIA
- Causative agents : Plasmodium genus
- Causes: The Anopheles mosquito transmits it to human. When an infected mosquito bites a human host, the parasite enters the blood stream and lays dormant within the liver.
- Symptoms: Malaria symptoms are divided into two categories: uncomplicated malaria and severe malaria
i. Uncomplicated malaria symtoms include shivering, fever, headache, vomiting, sweats.
ii. Severe malaria symptoms include fever, chills, consciousness, deep breathing, respiratory distress, abnormal bleeding, sign of anemia.
- Treatment: The WHO recommends artemisinin based combination therapy (ACT) to treat uncomplicated malaria.
PLAGUE
- Causative agents: Yersinia pestis
- Symptoms : Headache, fever and weekness
- Usual onset: Usually this begins 1-7 days after exposure.
- Diagnostic method: Finding the bacterium in a lymph node, blood, sputum.
AIDS
- Causative infection: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks immune cells called CD4 cells, which are a type of T cell.
- Causes: People transmit HIV in body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions,breast milk.
- Symptoms: i. Early symptoms include fever, chills, joint pain, muscle aches, sore throat, tiredness, weakness, weight loss. ii. Large stage symptoms include blurred vision, diarrhea, dry cough, high fever, shortness fever, white spots on the tongue or mouth.
- Diagnosis: HIV blood tests
- Treatment: No cure is available for HIV or AIDS. Treatment can stop the progression of the conditions and allow the people with HIV to live a long and relatively healthy life.
