There are three Newton's laws of motion for understanding the motion of any system.

Explanation:

Newton's first law of motion:

  • "Any object in motion will remain in uniform motion and any object at rest will stay at rest unless and until an external force is applied on it".
  • It is a property of mass to oppose any change in state of the system.
  • This property of mass is called inertia.
  • More the mass, greater is the inertia.

Newton's second law of motion:

  • "Force is defined as rate of change in momentum with respect to time".
  • F=ma, where m is the mass of body and a is the acceleration with which body moves.
  • This law describes or defines force.
  • Force can be expressed as  where  is the mass of object and  is the acceleration with which the body is in motion.

Newton's third law of motion:

  • "For any force of action acting on a body, it exerts equal amount of reaction force in opposite direction"
  • This law talks about direction of force.
  • It refers to the fact that force comes in pairs of action-reaction.
