In Britain there was a great demand for indigo. The british colonial government forced the farmers to grow indigo in their fields.

The farmers hated and didn't want to grow indigo because

  1. Indigo used to take longer time to grow.
  2. It spoilt the fertility of the soil.
  3. No other crop could grow after indigo plantations.
  4. The traders paid them a little but the taxes were high.

In pre colonial time the farmers forcefully cultivated indigo in their fields.

but in the post colonial period they protested by refusing to grow and pay tax.
