William Wordsworth is by far a great a poet of Nature. The poem ‘To Sleep’ provides us with some of the finest sights, sounds and movements of nature. The poet thinks of various things while he lies in bed without getting any sleep. A flock of sheep leisurely passing one after the other. He hears the sound of rain and the murmuring of bees. He also hears the fall of rivers, the noise of the wind and the roaring of the sea. The smooth fields, white sheets of water, and the pure sky are the other things that come into the poet’s mind. He can also hear the melodies of small birds coming from the orchard. The cuckoos melancholy song also is heard by him. All these sights and sounds fill the imagination of the readers, too. Three nights have passed since the poet had ever got any sleep.

He wishes that sleep came to him at least that night. Without sleep he will not be able to enjoy the splendour of the morning. Sleep brings fresh thoughts and joyous health. ‘To Sleep’ is a sonnet. A sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines. It is divided into two parts. The first eight lines form the Octave and the last six lines form the sestet. In the Octave of the poem the poet describes the beautiful sights and sounds of nature that fill his imagination. In the sestet, the poet describes the condition without sleep. He prays and wishes that sleep should come with its blessings. The poem is rich with figures such as personification, alliteration, hyperbole, rhetorical question, and so on. The rhyme scheme used in the poem is abba abba cde cde. On the whole this is a beautiful sonnet.
