Explanation:
A 22-year-old biker was killed and two others were injured when three motorcycles crashed into one another near the Bandra Worli Sea Link late on Sunday. The accident took place just 500 metres away from the toll booths. Two-wheelers are not allowed on the sea link.
Abhijeet Gurav, 22, was riding a two-wheeler while his friend Tushar Pagi, 18, was riding pillion. The two were heading home after visiting Bandra Bandstand, where they had gone to see Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s house, when Pagi told Gurav that he needed to urinate. Gurav parked the bike by the side of the road. While he was alone on the stationary bike, a speeding biker, later identified as Zafar Shaikh, 19, crashed into him from the rear.
“The two bikers fell on the road and had been lying there for at least five minutes when another biker came crashed into the two bikes. Shaikh’s bike caught fire and suffered burns, while one of the bikes fell on Gurav, inflicting severe head injuries,” said an officer from Bandra police station, who did not wish to be named.
The police were initially unable to get the second bike’s registration number as it was totalled in the crash. However, later they found it belonged to Shaikh. Another biker, identified as Akash Rajput, was also injured along with Shaikh, said officials.
The bikers were taken to Bhabha hospital, where Gurav was declared dead owing to severe head injuries. Though he had a helmet, it had been hanging from the bike’s handle when Shaikh’s bike crashed into him, said an officer who visited the accident spot.
The Bandra police have registered a case of rash driving, causing death due to negligence and causing injury against Shaikh. Both he and Rajput have been admitted to private hospitals, where they are recuperating. The police said Shaikh will be placed under arrest once he is discharged.
