Antarctica Treaty was made at Washington on December 1959 by 12 countries where scientists had active involvement in Antarctica during International Geophysical Year of starting from 1957 to 58. It entered into effect from 1961 and has been acceded to by different nations. Total number of Parties to Treaty is 53.

Among signatories of Treaty there were 7 countries - Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway and U.K. with territorial claims. Other countries don't recognize any claims.

"The twelve countries signed Antarctic treaty on 1st December 1959 at Washington. This treaty was signed in the manner to have a peace and to ensure that all mankind's have a secured life.

The treaty also includes the protection of Antarctic environment by saving the flora and fauna.

Some important provisions of the Treaty:

Antarctica will be used only for the peaceful purpose (Art. I)

There is always freedom for scientific experiment is Antarctica for the betterment of earth (Art. II).

The observations from these scientific experiments can be shared among the countries (Art. III).
