Thar Desert, also called Great Indian Desert, arid region of rolling sand hills on the Indian subcontinent. It is located partly in Rajasthan state, northwestern India, and partly in Punjab and Sindh (Sind) provinces, eastern Pakistan.

3. Life in the deserts

( Plants) -:Permanent features of the vegetation of the Thar Desert include trees and shrubs like Acacia nilotica, Prosopis cineraria, Tamarix aphylla, Lycium barbarum, Salvadora oleoides, Zizyphus numularia, Capparis deciduas, Acacia jacquemontii, Calligonum polygonoides and Leptadenia phytotechnica.

(Animals) -: Animals of the Thar Desert

Great Indian Bustard. There are 23 species of bustard birds, and of these, the great Indian bustard is the most endangered.

Blackbuck. The blackbuck is an antelope that inhabits parts of the Thar Desert.

(Occupations) -: agriculture

About 40% of the total population of Rajasthan live in the Thar Desert. The main occupation of the people is agriculture and animal husbandry. A colourful culture rich in tradition prevails in this desert. The people have a great passion for folk music and folk poetry.

( Clothing ) -: Traditionally men wear dhotis, kurta, angarkha and paggar or safa (kind of turban headgear). Traditional Chudidar payjama (puckered trousers) frequently replaces dhoti in different regions. Women wear ghagra (long skirt) and kanchli (top). However, dress style changes with lengths and breaths of vast Rajasthan.

( Food) -: 1)Thar desert:kharif crops like bajra,pulses,jowar,maize and sesame are staple consumed foods. 2)Himalayas are the vast stretch.In Kinnaur district of Himalayas the food habits are:wheat,ogla,phafra,and barley which are local produce,salted tea called char and alcoholic drinks are quite common.

The Sahara is a desert on the African continent. With an area of 9,200,000 square kilometres, it is the largest hot desert in the world and the third largest desert overall, smaller only than the deserts of Antarctica and the Arctic. 

Difference between Thar and Sahara Desert

The first and foremost difference is that the Thar Desert is in Asia while The Sahara Desert is in Africa. The Sahara Desert does not experience rainfall while The Thar Desert does have scanty rainfall. The Thar desert acts as a boundary between Pakistan and India and is also known as the Greatest Indian Desert.
