The story “A GIft of Chappals” by Vasantha Surya, focusses on the qualities of compassion and care that children are naturally blessed with.
Here too, when a beggar enters the compound, the lady of the house, Rukku Manni, makes it very clear that he is not welcome there anymore. She is tired of feeding him for the past one week and tries her best to send him away. The beggar acknowledges the fact that he has kept his “body and soul together on their generosity for a whole week”. However, he is unwilling to leave. Though Ravi passes on Rukku Manni’s and Paati’s message to the beggar, he cannot bear the sight of the blisters on the beggar’s feet. Meena and Mridu are equally upset and felt that it was “not fair”. Ravi is clear that the beggar needs slippers and drags Meena and Mridu into a slipper-search. Not being able to find any slippers that would fit the beggar, they give away the music teacher’s slippers and instruct the beggar not to come back. The grateful beggar disappears with a blessing for the children.
The children knew that they would eventually get into trouble for not just helping the beggar, but more so for giving away the teacher’s slippers. Mridu was brave and sincere enough to confess. While they got scolded, it is evident that Rukku Manni, their mother had been telling them stories of generosity. The children quoted Karna’s story to justify their own actions, but their mother would not listen to them. Eventually, she herself ended up giving away Gopu Mama’s new slippers to the teacher, setting another example of generosity.
One thing to note is that adults, are less giving than children.
