Tarain's First Battle happened in 1191 CE. On one hand, the battle was fought between the Indian ruler Prithviraj Chauhan and on the other, Muhammad Ghori had been defeated in the First Battle of Tarain by Prithviraj Chauhan

Explanation:

  • Mohammed Ghori started to concentrate on India after supporting his brother in extending the Ghurid Empire's western frontiers. Muhammad Ghori led a series of the Indian campaigns. At first Muhammad Ghori wanted to bring under his control the India's Muslim provinces.
  • In 1191, Ghori proceeded through the Khyber Pass towards India and captured a Bathinda fortress. That took him to the northwest frontier of the Kingdom of Prithviraj Chauhan. The Hindu princes of northern India formed a confederate under Prithiviraj Chauhan's command, realizing their grave situation. The army of Prithviraj, led by Govind Tai, his vassal prince, marched on to Bhatinda and encountered his enemy at Tarain place.
  • In a battle with Govind Tai, Ghori was wounded and so Ghori's army retreated, giving Prithviraj Chauhan victory. Prithviraj, however, did not pursue the army of Ghori, as he did not want to conquer hostile territory or misjudge the ambition of Ghori, but instead chose to retake Bhatinda's fortress.
  • Alternatively it was also reported that the army of Ghori surrendered, and Muhammad became a prisoner. Muhammad of Ghor pleaded for forgiveness and he was pardoned by Prithviraj. This way, Prithviraj Chauhan won the First Battle of Tarain.
