Answer:

Hyderabad saw its biggest rainfall in a single day in 100 years. This has already been a strong monsoon season with many of the lakes and reservoirs already full, thereby causing a major flooding.

Especially in the old city slums near Musi river, there has been devastation.  About 50 people have died in various incidents and hundreds of houses completely destroyed. Tens of thousands of homes have been flooded.

Support Requested for Relief/Rehab efforts:

Many volunteers have swung into action immediately. Immediate cooked food has been provided to thousands of people in the past 2 days, and with community effort + govt effort, temporary shelters have been arranged in function halls, schools, etc. Even when govt provided shelter, local groups are pitching in with food supply. Now, as the flood is receding, people are going back into their flooded homes, where all their grocery supplies have been lost and even as they are trying to restart the kitchens at their homes, they need grocery supplies.

Yesterday, we had a conference call with many civil society groups with ground updates from many localities in Hyderabad – the damage is quite widespread. Building on our collective work through the CoVid helpline during lockdown, we have a strong network of people across the area who are jumping in to help and pooling in resources.

1. Immediate requirements:

a. Food items – A basic grocery kit including rice and other items to get past the next 10 days. A family would need a kit of about Rs.1000. Just from one of our karyakartas, Syed Bilal, who is helping in 3-4 localities, there is a requirement for about 800 ration kits. Another group which works for housing rights (CHATRI) has asked for 300 kits. These are just 2 examples but there are many more. We are trying to pool local contributions and use local supply sources, but there is a requirement for at least some part of it from AID.

b. Medical supplies including water purification:

In each mohalla, there is some requirement for medical supplies. Lot of water contamination has happened, so even the municipal water supply needs thorough boiling and disinfection. The govt itself has given a notice that for the next 10 days, no one should drink municipal drinking water without boiling or disinfecting!

2.Rural damage:

Lots of damage to crops in rural areas, along with damage to houses etc. We are still assessing the situation. Most of our work will be advocacy with govt to ensure some relief to affected farmers. But we may need to help directly in some cases of dire need.

3.Reconstruction of houses:

Hundreds of houses in Hyderabad are completely destroyed. We are discussing how reconstruction can be facilitated. A couple of people in the network are also filing a PIL to ensure that the homeless get support during this time from the govt, and the new homeless created due to the floods get support.

But in some of these localities, govt is already been trying to displace slums, and this may be used as an opportunity by the govt. So we need to help strategically.
