The sign convention of concave and convex lens:

The sign convention of concave len is negative.

The sign convention of convex len is positive.

In case refraction through a lens if, we take the left-hand side to be positive and right-hand side to be negative, then focal length of the second surface of the lens that is F_{2} is used to determine sign.

For the convex lens, F_{2} lies in the positive quadrant whereas, in case on concave lens the focus of the second surface lies to the right which is in the negative quadrant.

Hence, the sign convention is negative.
