On the face of it, social networking sites sound like a waste of time. However, in today’s digital era, these sites have gained immense popularity while also serving some important purposes, primarily of helping people connect effectively.

At a personal level, these sites help individuals keep in touch with friends and family. As more and more youngsters are choosing to move out of their home towns for studies or employment, these sites help them stay updated about those who matter to them, irrespective of geographical distances. They keep everyone socially connected.

Additionally, these sites have evolved into a medium through which messages can be shared on a larger platform. For instance, any event or issue that requires the attention of the general public can be posted on these sites. It generates publicity and brings together people committed to the same goal. This includes government updates about disasters and rescue operations, adoption of abandoned dogs, fund raising for a cause, garnering support for justice, etc.

Economically speaking, the social media segment has created so many jobs. Overall, social media contributes to a better employment scenario.

Though social media is often equated with entertainment, its role cannot be underestimated. Given how it can make a positive difference in the world, social media is a necessity in terms of personal, societal and national growth.
