Tolstoy farm:

The name ‘Tolstoy Farm’ was given by Herman Kallenbach, who was Gandhiji’s associate. The Tolstoy Farm was founded in 1910. It was an ideal laboratory for Gandhiji’s informative experiments. Gandhiji considered the Tolstoy Farm to be his household. The children in the farm studied and worked to make the farm neat and clean. It was Gandhiji’s responsibility to train the children. Gandhiji also gave vocational training to the children for their all round development.

Tolstoy farm is the community of Indians it was started by Mahatma Gandhi. Tolstoy farm is situated in Johannesburg, South Africa. In the farm,there were many people of different religions like Hindu ,parsi ,musalman and Christians etc. Mr. Kallenbech and Mahatma Gandhi were highly impressed by the writings of Tolstoy. That's why they named The farm as 'Tolstoy farm'. In the farm Mahatma Gandhi gave more importance to vocational education. gandhiji wanted to give more skillful training to the children . Gandhiji regarded character building as the proper foundation for the education. The inmates of the farmer schooled by gandhiji. Tolstoy farm became the headquarters of the campaign of satyagraha.

Gandhiji gave first place to the culture of the heart or the building of character. There were no servants on the farm and all the works was done by the inmates of the farm. Mr. Kallenbech and Sjt. Pragji Desai assisted Gandhiji in literary training. Every teachers in the farm helped children to do their work.
